Nucleation and growth behavior of Er3+ doped oxyfluorophosphate glasses

Abstract:

The nucleation and growth behavior of glasses with the composition (75 NaPO3-25 CaF2)100−x–(TiO2/ZnO/MgO)x, with x = 0 and x = 1.5 (in mol%) is investigated.

“…Na, Bi, and Ba are not expected to be in the coordination site of Er 3+ ions. The absorption cross sections at 980 and 1530 nm are similar to those reported in other tellurite glasses [42][43][44] and in germanate glasses 45 but are higher than in phosphate glass, 46 silica, and silicate glasses. 47 Figure 2A-C displays the normalized upconversion, NIR, and MIR spectra of the Er 3+ -doped glasses obtained using 980-nm pumping, respectively.…”

“…6a). The mean size of the crystallites is estimated using the Scherrer's equation as in [26] and is estimated to be 16 nm in the Yb1 glass-ceramics, similar to the one reported in Er 3+ doped glass in the same glass system [26,34]. The mean size of the crystallites increases slightly to ∼24 nm when the concentration of Yb 2 O 3 increases to 3 mol%.…”

“…Transparent glass-ceramics in the NaPO 3 -CaF 2 system were successfully prepared with enhanced upconversion properties compared to the base glasses, due to the volume precipitation of Er 3+ doped CaF 2 crystals occurring during heat-treatment [14]. The onset of crystallization was reported to be largely different than the maximum nucleation temperature of glasses, independently of the glass composition, indicating that the nucleation and growth of the crystals can be controlled.…”
