The interphase nucleus and nuclear envelope can acquire a myriad of shapes in normal or pathological cell states. There exist a wide variety of indentations and invaginations, of protrusions and evaginations. It has been difficult to classify and name all of these nuclear shapes and, consequently, a barrier to understanding the biochemical and biophysical causes. This review focuses upon one type of nuclear envelope shape change, named "nuclear envelope-limited chromatin sheets" (ELCS), which appears to involve exaggerated nuclear envelope growth, carrying with it one or more layers of approximately 30 nm diameter heterochromatin. A hypothesis on the formation of ELCS is proposed, relating higher order heterochromatin structure in an interphase nucleus, nuclear envelope growth, and nuclear envelope-heterochromatin interactions.

Summary.-The ultrastructure of two lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from Marek's disease lymphomata has been studied. The cells varied from 5 to 12 ,um in diameter and had large round or oval nuclei. A nucleolus was occasionally present and about 3%0 of cells showed projections of the nuclear envelope. The cytoplasm contained many ribosomes and several mitochondria but endoplasmic reticulum was sparse. A small number of cells contained annulate lamellae and crystalline structures were occasionally seen. Cells with immature intranuclear herpesvirus particles were rarely present. The cells had many ultrastructural features in common with Burkitt's lymphoma-derived cell lines.

In the authors' opinion, there are no microscopic or ultramicroscopic character istics that permit separation of cultured human lymphoblastoid cells derived from normal individuals and from patients with leukemia, Burkitt's lymphoma and infectious mononucleosis. Further, there seemed to be no difference between lymphoblasts stimulated with phytomitogens and those of established cell lines. The spectrum of cell forms in each cell line under various culture conditions included stem cells, lymphoblasts, lymphocytes, plasmablasts and macrophages. There were no fibroblasts in the authors' cultures. All of the more than one hundred cell lines that have been tested produced immunoglobulins or immunoglobulin fragments. No granulocytic or erythroblastic cells were seen in long‐term cultures. A majority of the cell lines have retained normal karyotypes. They have continued to multiply rapidly for months and years, and thus appear to have an infinite life.
