Nuclear pore complex components have temperature‐influenced roles in plant growth and immunity

Abstract: Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) are main channels controlling nucleocytoplasmic transport and are composed of approximately 30 nucleoporins (NUPs). Emerging evidence suggests that some NUP genes have specialized functions that challenge the traditional view of NPCs as structures of uniform composition. Here, we analysed the role of six outer-ring components of NPC at normal and warm growth temperatures by examining their loss-of-function mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana. All six NUP subunits, NUP85, NUP96, NUP 13… Show more

“…Furthermore, the nup96 , nup160 , and hos1 mutants all elongate the hypocotyl to respond to high temperatures by suppressing the nuclear accumulation of PHYTOCHROME INTERACTING FACTOR 4 (PIF4), a key factor involved in perceiving temperature and photosynthetic signals. Moreover, the nup133 and nup96 mutants show defects in fresh weight after temperature change [ 108 ]. As an attenuator of cold stress signaling, HOS1 reduces the expression of cold responsive gene to decrease cold tolerance [ 109 ].…”

“…This suggests a different extent to which NUP160 and NUP96 modulate the nuclear abundance of protein regulators to coordinate various signaling pathways in response to environmental and developmental cues. This includes adaptations to elevated temperatures mediated by the transcription factor PHYTOCHROME INTERACTING FACTOR4 (PIF4; Zhang A. et al, 2020 ), but could also involve additional functions of these NUP107-160 complex members in nuclear mRNA export.…”

“…In relation to the RNA-based regulation, a nuclear pore complex protein-related gene (Solyc11g020200) is upregulated in Red Setter at 45 • C when compared to LA1994 and LA2661. In A. thaliana, several nuclear pore complex members are involved in temperature-regulated mRNA export but also in controlling the nuclear accumulation of temperature-response related transcription factors [54].…”
