“…The two species, VA RNA, and VA RNA,, (also known as 5.5S and 5.2S RNA), occur in a major fonn about 160 nucleotides in length and in an array of minor forms differing at both their 5' and 3' ends (5,6,16,24,43). Again in contrast to mRNA, the VA RNAs seem to be free of internal and terminal modifications such as methylation and capping, apart from a 5'-terminal polyphosphate vestige of RNA chain initiation (6,25,34,36,43). The genes that code for the VA RNAs are closely spaced, lying at or near the left (5') end of the main block of late structural genes, and are also transcribed in a rightward direction (22,24,32).…”

“…After digestion with a mixture of , T2, and pancreatic A ribonucleases, both mRNA pools yielded radioactive products that migrated during ionophoresis as two peaks on DEAE paper with mobilities slower than a marker with a net charge of -4 (Figure 1, panels a and b). Previous results have established that it is to this region of the DEAE paper that the 5' terminus of reovirus (m7GpppGmpCp) migrates under the ionophoretic conditions used here (McGuire et al, 1976). In addition to the two broad peaks in the S'-terminal region, digests of poly(A)-containing mRNA also contained radioactivity that migrated as a single sharp peak to the mononucleotide region of the paper (Figure 1, panel b).…”

“…-uninfected mammalian cells (Adams and Cory, 1975; Cory and Adams, 1975;Furuichi et al, 1975b;Lavi and Shatkin, 1975;McGuire et al, 1976;Rose, 1975; Shatkin, personal communication; Wei et al, 1975a). One example of the heterogeneity of modified sequences found at the 5' termini of cellular mRNA has appeared recently.…”

“…Whereas most if not all cellular mRNAs are capped (19,22), not all hnRNAs bear the blocked terminus (23,24); at least 50% of hnRNA molecules are capped in mouse L cells (25). It thus appears that capped hnRNA molecules serve as precursors to mRNA, and hnRNA molecules without caps probably do not give rise to mRNAs (26). The fate of nuclear transcripts may therefore be determined by their being capped or not capped.…”
