“…Madsen (1951), however, considered that C. bursata was not a valid species. In his paper of 1945 he described the recovery from pheasants and partridges of long female worms, identified as C. caudinflata, in which the characteristic vulval appendage was absent but in which 'remnants, however, could be demonstrated', presenting to some extent an appearance similar to that of C. bursata as described by Freitas & Almeida (1934). In his collection of male C. caudinflata Madsen found a wide range in spicule length and he observed that in some of the specimens with long spicules an atypical form of the bursa was present.…”

Four species of the genus Capillaria—C. anatis, C. bursata, C. caudinflata and C. obsignata—are described from the domestic fowl. C. bursata constitutes a new species record for Britain. Taxonomic problems concerning these species in particular, and of Capillaria species in general, are discussed in the light of experience gained from the present study.This work was carried out during the tenure of a British Egg Marketing Board research studentship and is part of a thesis accepted by the University of London for the Ph.D. degree. My thanks are due to the director of the Houghton Poultry Research Station for granting facilities for work and to the staff for their help and encouragement. Mr R. A. Avery kindly supplied me with material collected from the Wildfowl Trust, Slimbridge.

Capillaria copyschi sp. nov. is described from Copyschus c. saularis.Capillaria copyschi sp. nov. T h e material available consisted of two male worms, the heads of which were missing, and a number of complete females.Host: Copyschus c. saularis. Location: Small intestine. Desmip,hionBody very slender (Fig. 51, covered by a series of cuticular bosses. Oesophageal portion (Fig. 1) shorter and slightly thinner than posterior portion. Vulva near to mid-body just behind junction of oesophagus and intestine, provided with a protrusibtt: funnel-shaped cuticular appendage (Fig. 7), and with the cuticle of the body inflated anterior and posrerior to the vulva. Posterior end of female cylindrical and rounded. Anus (Fig. 6) subterminal.
