Novel synthesis and properties of pure and NV-doped nanodiamonds and other nanostructures

Abstract: We report a novel method for synthesis and processing of pure and nitrogen-vacancy (NV)-doped nanodiamonds with sharp NV 0 and NV − transitions at ambient temperatures and pressures in air. Carbon films are melted by nanosecond lasers in super undercooled state and quenched rapidly. We can form single-crystal nanodiamonds, microdiamonds, nanoneedles and microneedles, and largearea films. Substitutional nitrogen atoms and vacancies are incorporated into diamond during rapid liquid-phase growth, where dopant con… Show more

“…We have also fabricated N-V (nitrogen-vacancy) doped nanodiamonds [13] with size ranging from 4 to 8 nm. Figure 8(a) shows photoluminescence (PL) versus energy spectra of as-deposited N-doped amorphous carbon film, and this film after annealing with 0.6 J cm −2 ArF laser pulse.…”

“…When the Q-carbon layer breaks into small filamentary structures like nanorods, then these provide nucleation sites to grow platelet structures normal to the substrate. By doping amorphous carbon layers with N and Si, nanodiamonds can be doped with N and Si to create NV and SiV doped nanodiamonds needed for quantum sensing, communication, and computing [17].…”

“…The great interest and the exceptional range of applications of NDs is boosting the development of novel fabrication techniques, even if the actual technologies are already able to provide very pure nanodiamonds with controlled surface chemistry at a relative low cost. [148,149]…”
