Novel subtypes (subgenotypes) of hepatitis B virus genotypes B and C among chronic liver disease patients in the Philippines

Abstract: Several hepatitis B virus (HBV) subtypes (subgenotypes), HBV/Aa (A1 : Asia/Africa), Ae (A2 : Europe), Bj (B1 : Japan) and Ba (B2 : Asia), have been reported with respect to clinical differences between patients infected with these subtypes (subgenotypes). HBV genotype distribution among patients with chronic liver diseases was investigated in the Philippines, where such studies have not been carried out previously. One hundred sera were obtained from such patients, consisting of 32 chronic hepatitis (CH), 37 c… Show more

“…In the Philippines, a cross-sectional study of 100 HBV carriers with various stages of liver disease revealed that 51 HBV genotype A1, 22 genotype B and 27 genotype C strains, and genotypes B and C were more prevalent than genotype A in cirrhosis and HCC patients (P \ 0.02). In addition, the prevalence of BCP T1762/A1764 mutant was higher in HCC patients with genotypes B and C. Multivariate analysis indicated that age and core promoter mutation were risk factors for HCC development [83]. Taking these lines of evidence together, BCP T1762/A1764 mutation seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis of liver disease progression and serve as the strongest viral factor associated with HCC risk in HBV carriers.…”

“…Base on the inclusion criteria, only 17 case-control studies (Sakamoto et al, 2006;Tanaka et al, 2006;Shinkai et al, 2007;Wang et al, 2007;Yuan et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2007;Fang et al, 2008;Guo et al, 2008;Jang et al, 2008;Choi et al, 2009;Ja et al, 2009;Tangkijvanich et al, 2010;Welschinger et al, 2010;Zhu et al, 2010;Cho et al, 2011;Qu et al, 2011;Tatsukawa et al, 2011) with full-text were included in this meta-analysis and 18 studies were excluded. The flow chart of study selection is summarized in Figure 1.…”

“…Recently, two novel genotypes, I and J, the former described in Laos and Vietnam (Olinger et al, 2008;Tran et al, 2008), and the latter in Japan (Tatematsu et al, 2009), have been proposed, but their designation as new genotypes is still controversial. There is a great deal of diversity within the genotypes and this has led to the division of some genotypes into different subgenotypes, such as A1-A6 in HBV of genotype A (HBV/A), B1-B8 in HBV/B, C1-C10 in HBV/C, D1-D7 in HBV/D, and F1-F4 in HBV/F (Huy et al, 2006;Kramvis et al, 2008;Lusida et al, 2008;Meldal et al, 2009;Mulyanto et al, 2009;Norder et al, 2004;Nurainy et al, 2008;Pourkarim et al, 2010;Sakamoto et al, 2006;Utsumi et al, 2009;Wang et al, 2007). …”
