Novel Solid State Cladding of Brass to Steel Plate by Friction Stir Welding

Abstract: To use brass as a tribological material instead of Pb bronze, the feasibility of forming a lap joint of brass sheet on steel plate was investigated by using Friction Stir Welding, and it was proved that a lap joint with smooth surface and good joint strength was successfully made. Furthermore, the mechanism taking place at the lap joint of brass to steel was discussed by observing the interface.

“…Moreover, we observed a unique phenomenon in which many Fe particles were distributed in the brass filler (Figure 6(d)), which helped optimise the joint's mechanical performance, which has not been observed or reported in previous studies [41-43]. The previous studies failed to obtain this interface because of the welding control method.…”

“…Moreover, the interfacial width in this study was orders of magnitude higher than previously reported lap-joined brass/Fe by FSW [41][42][43]. The previous studies reported that only a layer less than 100 nm could be formed at the interface, and the elemental distribution varied astonishingly within the interface.…”
