Novel CT and scintigraphic findings of bone metastasis from invasive lobular breast cancer

Abstract: Osseous metastasis from ILC can have a characteristic imaging pattern on CT and SS. The pattern of USSL on CT scan with negative SS is highly suggestive of osseous metastasis from ILC.

“…13 When slow-growing breast cancer cells infiltrate the bone marrow, they cause minimal osteoblastic responses, and owing to these responses small sclerotic lesions are formed. 14,15 Sclerotic metastases are relatively acellular with lower volume of tumour tissues and less bone destruction than lytic lesions. 16,17 The sensitivity of lesion detection by the radiology resident was 57.7% on patient-based analysis through original CT reading.…”

“…8,9 The nonadherent cancer cells in ILCs exhibit augmented migratory and invasive potential as evidenced by their infiltrative diffusion pattern observed within various anatomical sites, including breast tissue, serosal surfaces, meninges, gastrointestinal tract, and ovaries. 10,11 Due to distinctive molecular mechanisms and clinical characteristics, ILC poses a greater challenge compared with IDC in imaging detection, which encompasses mammography, ultrasound, MRI, bone scans, and 18 F-FDG PET/ CT. [12][13][14][15][16][17] Therefore, it is imperative to develop better imaging schemes for the assessment of local infiltration and distant metastasis in ILC.…”
