With the combined surface imprinting technique and immobilized template strategy, molecularly imprinted magnetic nanoparticles were successfully prepared and coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography to selectively separate and determine gallic acid from the pomegranate rind. On the surface of carboxyl-functionalized magnetic nanospheres, thin imprinting shells were formed using dopamine as monomer and crosslinker. The characteristics, polymerization conditions, and adsorption performances of the resultant nanomaterials were investigated in detail. In addition of good crystallinity, satisfactory magnetism, and uniform morphology of the obtained polymers, they had rapid binding kinetics, high adsorption capacity, and favorable reusability. In the mixed solution of four hydroxybenzoic acids, the prepared nanomaterials have an excellent selectivity to gallic acid with an imprinting factor of as high as 17.5. Therefore, the polymers have great potentials in specific extraction and enrichment of gallic acid from the complex natural resources.

Dopamine oxidation and self-polymerization has recently gained a large interest arising from the versatile chemistry of this endogenous catecholamine. Particularly stimulating appear the applications of this biopolymer for surface coating, molecular imprinting, and electrochemistry, here reviewed, covering the broad fields of medicine, material science, and (bio)analytical chemistry.Nonetheless, the peculiar physicochemical properties of dopamine and its polymer, due to the reduction potential of catechol moiety, are not fully exploited. We have confidence in possibility to spread its applications through a large variety of research approaches, including the use of naturally occurring or synthetic dopamine analogues and co-polymers. Accordingly, our efforts in this direction are focused in proposing the role of this polymer for quantitative applications, evaluating analytical performances, costs, reproducibility and versatility of the developed methods also revisiting standard (bio)analytical platforms.

A study of an electrochemical sensor based on bovine hemoglobin (BHb) imprinted magnetic nanoparticles (MIPs) was investigated. First, BHb MIPs were successfully synthesized with magnetic Fe3O4@Au nanoparticles as carrier by surface modification of mercapto propionic acid for introducing carboxyl groups, combined with dopamine as the functional monomer and BHb as the template protein. Then, the MIPs were modified to the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for electrochemical analysis by using cyclic voltammetry in the potassium ferricyanide solution. Results show that there was a good dynamic response between electrochemical signals and the adsorption amount of protein in the range of 0.05 to 0.5 mg mL -1 . Results show that the sensor exhibits a significant specific recognition toward the template protein via selective test and can be used for analysis of serum samples. The synthesized MIPs are suitable for the removal and enrichment of template protein in proteomics. At the same time, the proposed electrochemical sensor can be used for recognition of BHb.
