Novel Phases Exhibiting Tristable Switching

Abstract: The phase, designated as Sm CA *, which shows tristable switching was investigated in C8H17O–--COO–-COO*CH(CH3)C6H13 (MHPOBC) by means of thermal analyses, a miscibility test and microscope observation. The phase transition from Sm C* to Sm CA * is not observable by AC calorimetry but small peaks comparable to the Sm A-Sm C* transition are discernible in DSC. According to the miscibility test of racemic MHPOBC with a standard compound, this new phase was found to exist betwe… Show more

“…At the outset of disclosing antiferroelectric SmC* A phase in MHPOBC, three other SmC*-like phases were observed (Chandani et al, 1989a). These phases were designated as SmC* α , SmC* β , and SmC* γ in order of decreasing temperature (Chandani et al, 1989b), the SmC* β phase was regarded as the oridinary ferreoelectric SmC* phase. Gorecka et al soon proved that SmC* γ is a ferrielectric phase (Gorecka et al, 1990).…”

“…Antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLCs) are attractive for microdisplay applications, because of their fast switching time [1] and passive multiplexability. A passively addressed multiplexed display, is a display in which rows of pixels are being "selected" sequentially by a waveform pulse while synchronously the corresponding data pulses are written to the various columns determining the grey level of each pixel in the selected row.…”
