Novel non-invasive method of measurement of endothelial function: enclosed-zone flow-mediated dilatation (ezFMD)

Abstract: Measurement of flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) is the conventional non-invasive method for assessment of endothelial function; however, it requires an expensive ultrasound system and high levels of technical skill. Therefore, we developed a novel method for measurement of endothelial function, namely, measurement of ezFMD. ezFMD estimates the degree of vasodilatation from the oscillation signals transmitted to a sphygmomanometer cuff attached to the upper arm. The objective of this study was to validate the pri… Show more

“…Releasing this external pressure allows determination of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as pressures that correspond to stages of initiation and unimpeded flow of blood, respectively. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (6) based on this scheme requires an inflating cuff and oscillometric measurement (7,8). The possibility for tissue damage due to the repeated blocking of blood flow in such approaches limits the interval of measurement to between 15 min and 30 min (9, 10).…”

“…It is therefore technically challenging to apply FMD testing to lower-limb arteries. With this in mind, the our research group proposed a novel method for determining the vascular endothelial function of upper-limb arteries easily without the use of an ultrasound device 11 – 13 . This technique, known as the enclosed zone FMD (ezFMD), involves the application of oscillometry (as used with commercial automated sphygmomanometers at patients’ homes and in hospitals) rather than vascular diameter measurement using an ultrasound device.…”
