Nitrogen-containing mesoporous carbons with the use of colloidal silica spheres of (14 nm) and chitosan as a carbon precursor were obtained. A removal of such small template particles from carbonized silica-chitosan composite is difficult and HF with a minimum concentration of 15 wt% should be used. By varying the silica-to-chitosan ratio, the porous characteristic of products is controlled. The modification by ZnCl 2 with a molar Zn-to-C (in chitosan mass) ratio of '6' results in the development of microporosity; however it is accompanied by a significant reduction of mesopore volume (V mes ). The addition of ZnCl 2 in a ratio of '5.25' and pH adjustment to 5.8 increase the volumes of micropores, small mesopores, BET surface area to 1975 m 2 /g, and preserve V mes of 4.15 cm 3 /g. The novelty of the presented strategy is the creation of microporosity in the hard-templated materials by incorporating ZnCl 2 into the mixture of Ludox HS-40 template and chitosan precursor, as well as the investigation on how the pH of synthesis influences the final porosity. The pH of a silica-chitosan-zinc solution, equal to 3.9, provides some coordination of Zn 2+ by -OH and -NH 2 groups, whereas pH adjustment to 5.8 results in the precipitation of a new template-Zn(OH) 2 .

Shell biorefinery, referring to the fractionation of crustacean shells into their major components and the transformation of each component into value-added chemicals and materials, has attracted growing attention in recent years. Since the large quantities of waste shells remain underexploited, their valorization can potentially bring both ecological and economic benefits. This Review provides an overview of the current status of shell biorefinery. It first describes the structural features of crustacean shells, including their composition and their interactions. Then, various fractionation methods for the shells are introduced. The last section is dedicated to the valorization of chitin and its derivatives for chemicals, porous carbon materials and functional polymers.

Facile Synthesis of Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheets/Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Composites for High-Performance Anode Material in Lithium-Ion Batteries

A facile strategy to prepare MoS2 nanosheets/nitrogen‐doped porous carbon (MoS2/NDPC) composites is designed based on liquid‐phase exfoliation (LPE). For preparation of MoS2/NDPC, chitosan (CS) is not only served as a good medium for LPE of MoS2, but also acted as carbon sources for creating NDPC matrix. Through CS‐assisted LPE of MoS2, the obtained CS‐stabilized MoS2 nanosheets dispersion is further lyophilized into the CS/MoS2 nanosheets foams. By carbonization of CS/MoS2 nanosheets foams, the MoS2/NDPC composites with MoS2 nanosheets embedded in the NDPC are successfully derived. The obtained MoS2/NDPC composites can facilitate fast Li‐ion transport and the NDPC enhance the electronic conductivity and retain the structure integrity. Therefore, the MoS2/NDPC composites can be used as high‐performance anode material in Lithium‐ion batteries, and exhibit outstanding long‐life cycling capability at high rates, namely, a specific capacity as large as 1260 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and 434 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1 after 50 cycles. At a current density of 5 A g−1, the MoS2/NDPC composites still show a high discharge capacity of ∼ 496 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles.
