A novel bisazo 5-[5-(4,6-dioxo-2-thioxo-hexahydro-pyrimidin-5ylazo)-naphthalen-1-ylazo]-2-mercapto-1H-pyrimidine-4,6-dione (H 4 L) ligand has been synthesized from diazotization coupling between naphthalene-1,5diamine and 2-thiobarbituric acid. Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Fe(III) chelates were prepared. All prepared compounds were characterized by different techniques. The azo groups did not participate in chelation according to the infrared spectra, whereas the thioamide group did participate. The azo dye ligand coordinated with all metallic ions in a neutral−keto−thiol structure and behaved as a bi-and tridentate moiety. Zinc, manganese, and iron chelates had an octahedral structure, while nickel and cobalt chelates had a tetrahedral structure, but the copper chelate had a square pyramidal geometry. The thermal behavior of all prepared compounds was investigated and thermokinetic parameters were also discussed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data reflected that Fe(III) and Zn(II) complexes were crystalline while the Cu(II) complex was amorphous. Calcination of the Fe(III) complex at 600 °C yielded a nanosized Fe 2 O 3 crystalline phase, elucidated by XRD and transmission electron microscope. The novel azo dye and some of its chelates were tested against HepG-2. The Fe 2 O 3 nanooxide showed remarkable activity against the HepG-2 cell line rather than its precursor Fe(III) complex. Co(II) had a higher antioxidant activity than the other investigated complexes. In both activities, the Cu(II) complex did not show any activity. Molecular modeling and some theoretical studies were validated, and the experimental results were interpreted.

Nd2O3, Cr2O3, and V2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by calcining the precursor materials that are novel mixed ligand complexes: [Nd(BDC)(ADMPY)(OAc)].H2O, [Cr(BDC)(ADM PY)Cl].H2O, and [V(BDC)(ADMPY)Cl].H2O, where BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and ADMPY = 2-amino-4,6-dimethyl pyrimidine. The generated compounds were examined through several techniques such as elemental analysis (C.H.N), UV-Vis spectroscopy, thermal analysis (thermogravimetric, differential thermogravimetry, and differential thermal analysis), FT-IR spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The TEM micrographs showed that neodymium oxide nanoparticles assumed agglomerated platelet-like particles, with particle sizes around 30.16 nm, while chromium oxide NPs showed solid block material with compact density and fewer pores with nearly spherical shape and 56.12 nm size. The vanadium oxide NPs were an agglomeration of small spherical nanoparticles of 28.4 nm size. The antimicrobial properties of the samples were assessed using two strains of Gram-positive bacteria, two strains of Gram-negative bacteria, and one strain of yeast. The antimicrobial results demonstrated that a large spectrum of activity characterizes the tested compounds because they are active on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, especially on Gram-positive strains. The antioxidant activity of prepared compounds was assessed by scavenging free radicals of DPPH. Metal oxide NPs also showed promising results as antioxidants.

A new bismuth(III) Schiff-base complex [Bi 2 (HL) 2 (NO 3 ) 4 (CH 3 OH)]•2CH 3 OH was prepared by reaction of the equivalent molar of Schiff-base ligandand Bi (NO 3 ) 3 •5H 2 O with the assistance of mannitol. The complex was structurally characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, MS, 1 HNMR, and 13 CNMR) and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular structure of the complex reveals that the ligand forms a 1:1 complex with bismuth(III) ion. It is composed of two 7-coordinated bismuth(III) ions, two tetradentate O 2 N-donor ligands, four nitrate ions, and three methanol molecules. The complex and its free ligand were evaluated against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The complex was more active than the ligand against all bacterial strains. Their cytotoxic activity was also investigated against SNU-16 cell. The complex is approximately three times more potent than the ligand, with the IC 50 values 0.35 and 1.18 μM for the complex and its ligand, respectively.
