Novel Gemini Cationic Surfactants: Thermodynamic, Antimicrobial Susceptibility, and Corrosion Inhibition Behavior against Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

Abstract: The Egyptian oil and gas industry is suffering from severe metal corrosion problems, particularly microbial‐induced corrosion. There is limited knowledge on the corrosion inhibition of carbon steels in the presence of an acidophilic, iron‐oxidizing bacterial species Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. Therefore, in this study, novel Gemini cationic surfactants, in three forms depending on variation in alkyl chains of 8, 12, and 16 carbon atoms named FHPAO, FHPAD, and FHPAH, respectively, were synthesized and chara… Show more

“…The head group can spontaneously adhere by physical or chemical adsorption to the metal or metal oxide surface; the hydrophobic tails are kept together via weak noncovalent interactions and the results is the formation of a wellordered molecular layer (Jadhav, 2011;Costa et al, 2016;Telegdi, 2020;Poberžnik et al, 2020). It is interesting to observe that similar spontaneous assembly is also observed for ionic surfactants used in large extent for the corrosion protection of steel in acidic media of oil and gas industry (Shaban et al, 2020;Labena et al, 2020).…”

“…In the opposite, there is a disarrangement of the normal water molecules bordering the hydrophobic moieties as the temperature rises and the micillization is unloved. As seen in table (3), the CMC results diminished as temperatures maximized, i.e. enhance in micellization occurred.…”

“…Surfactants are distinguished by their capacity to decrease surface tension between two distinct phases, one of which is liquid. Surfactants have a distinctive structure that allows them to aggregate in micelles and/or adsorb at system interfaces for system stability, giving them an essential position in a wide range of vital applications like generating microemulsions., detergent, pharma-ceutical applications, emulsion polymerization, corrosion inhibitors, nanotechnology, drug delivery, emulsifier, enhancing oil recovery & biocide [3,4]. Nonionic surfactants are thought to be one of the greatest environmentally friendly between the other forms of surface active agents [5].…”

“…Considering the exceptional surface properties, Gemini surfactants have found potential applications in corrosion inhibition, gene delivery, drug delivery, enhanced oil recovery and various home and personal care formulations (Datir et al, 2021; Deyab & Mohsen, 2021; Fisicaro et al, 2014; Fu et al, 2016; Kaczerewska et al, 2018; Kamal, 2015; Liu et al, 2020; Mahajan et al, 2012; Patil et al, 2023; Rajput et al, 2018, 2020). In addition to aforesaid applications, Gemini surfactants are proven to have excellent biological activity and anti‐microbial properties (Aiad et al, 2013; Labena et al, 2020; Shaban et al, 2014, 2016, 2018; Shaban & Kim, 2020).…”
