Novel Fe3O4 Nanoparticle/β-Cyclodextrin-Based Polymer Composites for the Removal of Methylene Blue from Water

Abstract: The tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile cross-linked β-cyclodextrin was first subjected to the carboxylation reaction, followed by the deposition of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles on its surface to obtain the novel magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticle/β-cyclodextrin-based polymer composites (CDP-Fes). The successful preparation of the CDP-Fes was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, two-dimensional EDS mapping, zeta potential measurement, vibrating sample magnetometry, wide-angle X-ray diffra… Show more

“… 50 Notably, the dye adsorption capacity of AA-VSA-P with a lower concentration of SPIONs, i.e., AA-VSA-P/SPIONs-I, is little higher than those of AA-VSA-P/SPIONs-II and AA-VSA-P/SPIONs-III, which is prominent at a higher initial dye concentration (e.g., 50 mg/L). As discussed in the earlier section ( Section 2.4 ), the results can be ascribed to the fact that in the presence of a higher number of SPIONs, more Fe 3 O 4 acted as an additional network point (through the interaction of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, i.e., Fe 3 O 4 (OH) x , with COO – and groups, as discussed in Section 2.2 ), and accordingly, the cross-link density of the hydrogel became larger, which also leads to the lowering of the available number of COO – and groups to interact with MB dye, which may cause the observed drop in the equilibrium adsorption capacity of MB dye 1 , 41 for the AA-VSA-P/SPIONs hydrogel with higher SPIONs content.…”

“…The current level of synthetic dye production capacity is reported to be as high as more than 700,000 tonnes/year for the purpose of the extensive industrial application. 1 In fact, despite being serious pollutant sources to water resources, synthetic dyes in large numbers are being indiscriminately discharged from various industries, mainly textiles, cosmetics, papering and pulping, leathering, printing, painting, dyeing and dye manufacturing, and so on, bringing about severe environmental problems. The major portion of these synthetic dyes is comprised of cationic dyes, which can do great harm to the environment after getting discharged into water.…”

“…The linear form of isotherm is given in Equation (): 1qe=1KL.Qm1Ce0.25em+1Qm, where, C e (mg L −1 ) is the equilibrium concentration of dye solution, q e (mg g −1 ) amount of dye adsorbed per unit mass of adsorbent, K L (L mg −1 ) is Langmuir isotherm constant, which shows attraction between adsorbent and adsorbate pair. Q m (mg g −1 ) is the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent that is the amount of dye that can be adsorbed by unit mass of adsorbent and monolayer is formed on the surface of adsorbent 34 …”

“…The internal recognition forces mainly include van der Waals force, dispersion force, etc., whereas the latter forces mainly rely on hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, β-CD is often integrated into Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles for the adsorption/separation of bisphenols [24], dye molecules [25], heavy metal ions [26], and other environmental pollutants [27].…”
