Novel Discharge Logic Gate for Reducing the Number of Scanning Drive Circuits of Plasma Display Panel

Abstract: We investigated the effectiveness of using argon gas with added nitrogen when filling deep sub-mm through-holes with copper by high-vacuum planar magnetron sputtering, and we examined the optimum amount of added nitrogen. This is done by varying the amount of added nitrogen between 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 10, and 20 at. % in copper filling experiments conducted at a substrate temperature of 280 C and a gas pressure of p ¼ 9:0 Â 10 À2 Pa with 80-nm-diameter holes having an aspect ratio of 5.6. The results show that the … Show more

“…These devices are mostly useful in analog switching applications. The only report of using microscale plasma to perform digital logic switching, to the best of our knowledge, was in realizing an AND logic using plasma discharges for addressing pixels in plasma display [14]. In this paper, we use microplasma switches to perform AND, OR, and XOR operations.…”

“…By demonstrating logic switching using microplasmas, this paper takes a significant leap toward the goal of realizing simple computers in the future that would be immune to high temperatures and ionizing radiation. The AND implementation used in this paper differs from [14] in the electrode arrangement and the discharge mechanism. In addition to harsh environment circuits, the plasma logic gates can be used in multiple discharge applications in plasma display panels to simplify addressing of discharges.…”

“…The space-charge surrounding microplasmas was used in the past to modify the breakdown voltage and demonstrate AND logic operation for switching pixels in plasma display panels. 12 The AND operation was achieved through a combination of plasma space charge effect and time-controlled switching. In our work presented here, the switching is completely based on the effect of space charge that electrically connects lPDs to form logic gates without any metal interconnects.…”
