Novel carrier‐based hybrid pulse width modulation method for cascaded capacitor‐clamp multilevel inverter

Abstract: This study presents a new carrier-based hybrid pulse width modulation (PWM) Method for the cascaded capacitorclamp multilevel inverter (CCCMLI), which combines the benefits of a new alternative level-shifted carrier PWM and a phase-shifted carrier PWM. For modulating the CCCMLI, the phase disposition sub-harmonic PWM was first proposed, but does not show good performances in an even load sharing between inverter cells connected in series, flying-capacitor voltage balancing and output waveform quality. On the o… Show more

“…Using Fourier series expansion, the analytical solution for digital CPS-PWM, u osi (t) can be derived as in (10). Equation (10) can be solved by (8), (9), and Bessel's function of first kind and it can be written as in (11); where m and p are base band and side band index, respectively; the value of γ and φ are defined in (12) and (13), respectively (see (10))…”

“…The performance in terms of line-to-line voltage and current waveforms are analysed. Kim et al [19] have implemented a new carrier-based hybrid PWM scheme for the cascaded capacitor-clamp multilevel inverter that combines the benefits of an alternative level shifted carrier PWM and a phase-shifted carrier PWM. This method enables to achieve a balanced load sharing between cascaded cells even at low amplitude modulation indices as well as the excellent voltage balancing control of the flying capacitors with a much smaller voltage ripple and the good harmonic characteristics in output waveform.…”

“…Once the topology of the multilevel inverter is specified, a proper modulation method is critical, which determines the output performance such as waveform quality and efficiency [17–19]. Modulation methods such as space vector pulse‐width modulation (PWM), carrier disposition modulation, and carrier phase shift modulation have been designed for multilevel inverters [18, 20, 21]. More specifically, for space vector PWM technology, as the output voltage levels increase, the number of basic vector and the choice of the redundant states are relatively complex, which are not suitable for 7L inverter.…”
