Novel alternative for submental intubation - A case report -

Abstract: Background: Submental intubation is commonly used during general anesthesia for maxillofacial surgeries as it provides a safe unrestricted surgical access compared to tracheostomy. During submental intubation, soft tissues and blood clots can become lodged in the endotracheal tube. To overcome this problem, we used a laparoscopic trocar.Case: A 52-year-old man with maxillofacial injury was scheduled to undergo an open reduction and internal fixation. We performed submental intubation using laparoscopic trocar,… Show more

“…In the several reported endotracheal intubation methods [6][7][8][9][10], a wire-reinforced endotracheal tube was used to prevent obstruction due to bending or damage of the endotracheal tube, which we used in all trials. Also, to prevent ob-struction caused by the entry of foreign substances into the tube and complications due to route incision, we utilized various methods of submental intubation.…”

“…Submental intubation is much simpler, more convenient, and presents with a lower incidence of complications than tracheotomy [5]. Since Altemir first proposed the submental intubation method, several modified methods have been reported [6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…Different devices have been suggested, especially to facilitate the externalisation of the orotracheal tube, making the technique faster and easier and reducing the risk of complications. Among the proposals are the use of laparoscopic trocar (Jung et al, 2020), sterile camera cable drape (Yun et al, 2020) and a kit for transposition of the orotracheal tube composed of a conical punch device, coupled cylinder pliers and tongue retractor and drilling guide (Silveira, Costa & Amaral, 2020).…”
