-(Floristic and structure of the shrub and tree vegetation of Areias Brancas of Serra de Itabaiana National Park/ Sergipe, Brazil) The Serra de Itabaiana National Park is distinguished by its phytophysiognomic diversity, among which, a locally known as Areias Brancas (white sands), an open vegetation, ranging from herb-shrub to shrub-tree and classified by some authors as restinga or cerrado, depending on its size. Aiming to characterize and classify vegetational type were selected two sites in Areias Brancas of Serra de Itabaiana National Park and built a list following deposited material in the ASE Herbarium and additional sampling. To the phytosociological study it was used the wandering quarter method, sampling all individuals with trunk circumference (> 15 cm) at breast height (1.30 m). It was verified, at the Areias Brancas, the occurrence of 193 species belonging to 145 genera and 60 families that are mostly represented by herb and shrub species. It is noticeable the high number of species found in Areias Brancas when compared with studies conducted throughout the National Park. There are significant floristic similarity between sampling sites, but structurally the two areas should be considered as different sucessional faces, due to variations in density, height and dominance. Even with plant species in common, the Areias Brancas of the National Park can not be classified as restinga or cerrado for not having common origins for these formations. The Areias Brancas should be considered as an ecological refuge, an azonal vegetation derived from the special conditions of substrate formation.Key words -ecotone, refuge, succession RESUMO -(Florística e estrutura da vegetação arbustivo-arbórea das Areias Brancas do Parque Nacional Serra de Itabaiana/ Sergipe, Brasil). O Parque Nacional Serra de Itabaiana destaca-se pela diversidade fitofisionômica, dentre estas, uma conhecida localmente por Areias Brancas, uma vegetação aberta que varia de arbustiva-herbácea a arbustiva-arbórea e classificada por alguns autores como restinga ou cerrado, a depender do porte. Com intuito caracterizar e classificar esta fitofisionomia foram selecionadas duas áreas amostrais de Areias Brancas no Parque Nacional Serra de Itabaiana e construída uma listagem de acordo com o material depositado no Herbário ASE e de coletas adicionais. Para o estudo fitossociológico foi utilizado o método dos quadrantes errantes, amostrando todos os indivíduos com circunferência do tronco (> 15 cm) a altura do peito (1,30 m). Foi verificada nas Areias Brancas do Parque, a ocorrência de 193 espécies, distribuídas em 143 gêneros e 60 famílias, sendo, em sua maioria, representadas por espécies herbáceas e arbustivas. Ant-gardens represent a special type of association between ants and epiphytes. Frequently, two ant species can share the same nest in a phenomenon known as parabiosis, but the exact nature (i.e., mutualistic or parasitic) of this interaction is the subject of debate. We thus attempted to clarify the mutual costs and benefits for each partner (ants and plants) in the Crematogaster levior/ Camponotus femoratus ant-garden parabiosis. The ants response to experimental foliar damage to the epiphytes and to the host tree as well as their behavior and interactions during prey capture were investigated to see if the purported parasitic status of Cr. levior could be demonstrated in either the ant-ant or in the ant-plant interactions. The results show that both species take part in protecting the epiphytes, refuting the role of Cr. levior as a parasite of the ant-garden mutualism. During capture of large prey Ca. femoratus took advantage from the ability of Cr. levior to discover prey; by following Cr. levior trails Ca. femoratus workers discover the prey in turn and usurp them during agonistic interactions. Nevertheless, the trade-off between the costs and benefits of this association seems then to be favorable to both species because it is known that Cr. levior benefits from Ca. femoratus building the common carton nests and furnishing protection from vertebrates. Consequently, parabiosis can then be defined as the only mutualistic association existing between ant species, at least in ant-gardens.

The Amazonian white-sand vegetation presents a set of unique features, such as the dominance of a few species, high endemism and low species richness, which differentiate it from other Amazonian forests. Soil parameters have long been recognized as the main drivers of white-sand vegetation (WSV) characteristics. However, how they influence the composition, richness and structure of this vegetation type is still poorly understood. In this study we investigated the variation in floristic composition between patches and the soil-vegetation relations in three central Amazonian WSV patches. We tested whether slight differences in soil properties are linked with differences in floristic composition, species richness and forest structure in adjacent patches. In each patch three plots of 50 x 50 m were sampled (a total of 2.25 ha). Soil samples were collected for each plot. The sampling cutoff for arboreal individuals was DBH ≥ 5 cm. We sampled a total of 3956 individuals belonging to 40 families and 140 species. In each patch only a few species were dominant, but the dominant species varied among patches. Differences among patches were significant, but plots in the same patch tended to have similar species composition. The variable sum of bases (SB) was directly related to species composition, however, species richness and forest structure were not related to soil parameters. Even small variations in soil parameters can change species composition in WSV, although these variations do not necessarily influence the richness and other structural parameters.KEYWORDS: species richness, oligotrophic ecosystems, dominance, sum of bases Composição florística, estrutura e relação solo-vegetação em três áreas de campinarana na Amazônia central RESUMOAs campinaranas amazônicas apresentam uma série de características únicas, como a dominância de poucas espécies, alto grau de endemismos e baixa riqueza de espécies, que as diferenciam de outras formações florestais amazônicas. Parâmetros edáficos têm sido apontados como os principais responsáveis pelas características das campinaranas. Contudo, como estes parâmetros influenciam a composição, riqueza e estrutura deste tipo de vegetação ainda é pouco entendido. Neste estudo investigamos a variação estrutural, a composição florística e a relação solo-vegetação em três áreas de campinarana na Amazônia central, com intuito de testar se pequenas diferenças nos parâmetros edáficos do solo estão relacionados com diferenças na composição, riqueza e estrutura do componente arbóreo em áreas de campinarana adjacentes. Em cada área foram amostradas três parcelas de 50 x 50 m (totalizando 2.25 ha), com o critério de inclusão para os indivíduos de DAP ≥ 5 cm. Amostras de solo foram coletadas em cada parcela. O número total de indivíduos amostrados foi 3956, pertencendo a 40 famílias e 140 espécies. Em cada área poucas espécies foram dominantes, mas estas variaram entre as áreas.
