“…S4) from a wall orifice, and thus, velocity fluctuations in tandem with vortices were formed. Then, the vortices would develop under the effect of viscous diffusion and pressure distribution ( 18 ). Because of the friction against the wall, the pressure gradient is smaller at the inlet and gradually increases toward the outlet ( 19 ).…”

“…In our study, the increased blood damage with Impella CP under conditions of outlet obstruction, compared to normal operating conditions, can be explained by the increase in the exposure time to SS >425 Pa by >3 times due to flow restriction and increase in turbulence. Interestingly, a theoretical link between turbulent flows and SS has been proposed and evaluated by others, 24,25 demonstrating that energy dissipation should be considered in addition to bulk SS. Based on this concept, the specific energy dissipation of the blood near the impeller and pump housing of the Impella CP was calculated for normal and obstructed outlet conditions, similar to the in vitro hemolysis testing.…”

“…169 With the disturbance of a periodic jet driven by a loudspeaker, velocity fluctuations in tandem with vortices are generated. Owing to the effect of viscous and pressure diffusion, the vortices would propagate downstream and interact with each other, 170 stretching and rotating to form smaller vortices. Because of a spatially symmetric interaction, the small vortices become isotropic, resulting in a round shape as a secondary structure.…”
