Notes on new advancements and revelations in the agricultural archaeology of early rice domestication in the Dongting Lake region

Abstract: The Liyang plain, located in the northwest of Hunan province, is part of the plain on the north of Dongting Lake. It is situated at longitude 111°22′30″E to 111°51′30″E, and latitude 29°35′31″N to 29°47′30″N. It is made up of the Li River, its tributaries and the alluvial plain, and occupies about 600 sq. km in area (FIGURE 1).The plain is saucer-shaped and surrounded by small hills on three sides, joined at the eastern part to the plain north of Dongting Lake. “…The civilization in the Yangtze River catchment was closely aligned with rice cultivation that started in the Liyang Plain as early as 7000 BC (Pei 1998(Pei , 2004; Gorodetskaya and Guo 2014), spread to the Taihu Plain around 5000 BC, and influenced the societies of the YRP by 3300 BC (Gorodetskaya 2013). In the following one thousand years, this rice culture entered the Sichuan Basin (Jiang 2015;Huang et al 2017), extended to the HRP, and reached the periphery of the Shandong Hill (Jing and Wang 2006;Jing et al 2017) (Fig.…”

“…The early sites where rice was apparently cultivated seem to be focused on the Middle to Lower Yangtze valley and sites nearby. These include sites in Hunan (e.g., Anping, 1998;Hunan Provincial Institution of Archaeology and Cultural Relics [HPIACR]., 2006;Gross and Zhao, 2014;Guo and Guo, 2014), Zhejiang (e.g., Fuller et al, 2007Fuller et al, , 2009Fuller et al, , 2011Zuo et al, 2017;Qiu et al, 2019), southwest Henan (e.g., Zhang and Hung, 2013;Deng et al, 2015), Jiangsu (e.g., Zhang et al, 2014;Qiu et al, 2018), and near the Jiangsu-Shanghai border (Atahan et al, 2008). The problem with interpretation of the early dates is that sites are often not always associated with the tools of cultivation or clear evidence of sedentary societies associated with the crops.…”
