Notes and recommendations on taxonomy and nomenclature of Chironomidae (Diptera)

Abstract: Various issues in taxonomy and nomenclature of Diptera Chironomidae are discussed, in order to formalize and explain scientific names used in the Fauna Europaea database publications. General and specific remarks point out and exemplify the most common causes for erroneous data: insufficient consultation of the primary sources (literature and material), unjustified assumptions of type status, and uncritical handling of untested information. Recommendations are offered on how to avoid or solve such problems, an… Show more

“…Chironomids were separated from the remainder and identified up to the genus-or species level with established keys (Smith & Distler, 1981;Wiederholm, 1983;Pillot, 1984aPillot, , b, 2009Vallenduuk & Pillot, 2007). The taxonomy used here is that of Spies & Saether (2004), with adjustments following H. M. Pillot (personal communication).…”

“…Having this in mind, one could expect that the abundance-distribution relationship would also occur at higher taxonomic levels other than species, which would be desirable bearing in mind the limited knowledge available for Neotropical fauna. This seems especially suitable for chironomids, in which there are a high number of synonyms and unclear descriptions (Spies & Saether, 2004) that create problems associated with differing species validity (Ferrington, 2008).…”

“…As mentioned above, Kieffer's personal collection is presumably lost (Gagné 1994;Spies and Saether 2004) so we cannot confirm the identification of our specimens based on direct comparisons with the type material. Nevertheless, a detailed examination of our collected specimens and their galls revealed that B. mendocinus Kieffer and Jö rgensen actually represents an odd form of Allorhogas, with an extremely rugose cuticule in most of the head and mesosoma (see below).…”
