Chemical biology opens the door to understanding biological processes in many areas, but nowhere has it had a greater impact on defining a field than in glycobiology. The Wolf and Nobel Prize-winning work by Carolyn Bertozzi and coworkers to conceptualize bioorthogonal chemistry, enable it on living cells, deploy it with metabolic chemical reporters (MCRs) such as N-azidoacetylmannosamine-tetraacylated (Ac 4 ManNAz), has allowed researchers to elucidate the structure, functions, and regulation of complex glycans across various domains of life. In this review, we highlight how our work using Ac 4 ManNAz to discover glycosylated RNA (glycoRNA) shed the traditional paradigms of RNA post-transcriptional modification discovery. While our understanding of RNA modifications has historically been expanded with unbiased chemical tools, the creative use of Ac 4 ManNAz for the targeted study of RNA's intersection with glycobiology has advanced Bertozzi's impact into the world of RNA.

This work details the latest advancements on a single-channel, reactive Brain-Computer Interfaces developed at the Interdepartmental Research Center in Health Management and Innovation in Healthcare (CIRMIS) of the University of Naples Federico II. The proposed instrumentation is based on Extended Reality (XR) and exploits the acquisition and classification of the Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs).In particular, an XR headset is employed for generating the flickering stimuli necessary to the SSVEP elicitation. The users brain signals are captured by means of a highly wearable and portable electroencephalografic acquisition unit, which is connected to a portable processing unit in charge of processing in real time the incoming data. In this way, a deeper interaction between users and external devices with respect to traditional architectures is guaranteed. The classification capability of the proposed instrument has been significantly improved over the years. Currently, in fact, a classification accuracy up to 90 % is obtained with at least 2 s of acquisition time.

Methane (CH4) gas sensors play an important role in industrial safety and detection of indoor gas quality. In general, metal oxide semiconductor sensing materials with nano-structure have high responses to the target gas. However, the sensor resistance is usually very high. Considering the practical application, it is vital to reduce base resistance and improve sensitivity for gas sensors. Herein, Pd-doped SnO2 nanoparticles were prepared as the basis material by a simple sol-gel method. In order to adjust the resistance, the pentavalent metal element (Sb) was introduced via a simple doping route. As CH4 sensing layers, the prepared SnO2-sensors doped with Pd and Sb exhibited the most obvious resistance reduction effect. Meantime, excellent sensing performances including high response, fast response/recovery time, excellent reproducibility and great stability were also obtained. In-depth research has shown that the ability to reduce resistance depends on the effective internal doping of cation with high valence. The enhanced sensing capability can be attributed to the ‘synergistic effects’ including catalytic effects of novel metals, increased oxygen vacancies and decreased band gap energy. This work can provide a new opportunity to design metal oxide sensing materials with low resistance and high sensitivity.
