Note on the Intercalation of Kaolinite, Dickite and Halloysite by Dimethyl-Sulfoxide

Abstract: Various kaolinites, a dickite and halloysites have been treated by DMSO in presence of D20 and subsequently washed by D20. This procedure allowed to record OD stretching bands which are due specifically to the intercalated fraction and, for the washed samples, to the fraction of the solid which has been intercalated and has subsequently collapsed. No structural difference is found between the intercalated materials prepared from the various minerals. Washing usually restores the starting mineral; however, for a… Show more

“…Intercalating compounds also have a certain hydrogen bonding capacity. Formamide, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and N-methylformamide (NMF) are known to directly intercalate, resulting in an increase of the interlayer spacing within the kaolinite (7,8). This increase depends on the size and arrangement of the guest species (7,9,10).…”

“…IR spectra performed for fine clays SN5 show all the bands characterizing halloysite (Farmer, 1964;Anton and Rouxhet, 1977). Distinct IR features point to the presence of kaolinite in the clays SN2 and MK1.…”

“…The organofunctionalization of kaolinite can be made after the intercalation of small polar molecules, which widens the interlayer distance and diminishes the interlayer bond strength (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). With this technique, the aluminol groups (Al-OH) were reacted with alcohols (R-OH), making ether-type bonds (Al-O-R) (9 -11).…”
