Translocation and radio-telemetry monitoring of pygmy marmoset, Cebuella pygmaea (Spix, 1823), in the Brazilian Amazon

Two groups of pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea) were rescued along the left bank of the Madeira River during the formation of Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Dam reservoir in the state of Rondônia, Northern Brazil. Reintroduction of both groups occurred in areas of open Tropical rainforest located within the project´s Permanent Preservation Area. A post-release monitoring was conducted for three months using radio-telemetry. Individuals of each group remained together and settled in stable home ranges near their respective release sites. The mortality rate of translocated animals was about 7%. This seems to be the first report documenting the complete group translocation of C. pygmaea and the first to successfully employ radio-telemetry techniques in monitoring this species. This study demonstrated the feasibility of translocation and the use of radio-telemetry in monitoring C. pygmaea.Keywords: Cebuella pygmaea, translocation, radio-telemetry, wildlife rescue, conservation. Translocação e monitoramento por radiotelemetria do mico-leãozinho,Cebuella pygmaea (Spix, 1823), na Amazônia brasileira Resumo Dois grupos de mico leãozinho (Cebuella pygmaea) foram resgatados ao longo da margem esquerda do Rio Madeira durante o enchimento do reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica Santo Antônio, em Rondônia, norte do Brasil. A reintrodução de ambos os grupos deu-se em áreas de floresta ombrófila densa aberta dentro da Área de Preservação Permanente do empreendimento. Após a reintrodução, empregou-se a técnica de radiotelemetria para o monitoramento dos animais por aproximadamente três meses. Cada um dos grupos manteve-se coeso e estabeleceu suas áreas de vida em regiões próximas àquelas onde foram soltos. A taxa de mortalidade foi de aproximadamente 7%. Este parece ser o primeiro trabalho a documentar a translocação de grupos completos de C. pygmaea e o primeiro a empregar com sucesso a radiotelemetria no monitoramento desta espécie. Este estudo, portanto, demonstra a factibilidade da translocação e do uso da radio-telemetria para monitorar C. pygmaea.

Habitat fragmentation due to transport infrastructure, such as highways, is receiving growing concern due to deleterious consequences of roadkill, a consequence of animal-vehicle collisions. This study was conducted on a 115 km section of the highway BR-242 between the Peixe Angical Hydroelectric Power Plant and Gurupi town, Tocantins state, Brazil. During twelve months, records of medium and large-sized mammals' roadkilled by vehicle collisions were weekly acquired. Photographic records, date and place of occurrence were obtained for each roadkilled animal. We also propose new indexes to evaluate roadkill rates. In total, 18 species, 17 genera, 10 families, and six orders were recorded. The species with the highest number of registers were: Cerdocyon thous, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Tamandua tetradactyla, Procyon cancrivorus, Nasua nasua and Dasyprocta leporina, corresponding to 73.5% of roadkills. The curve of species accumulation showed no tendency for stabilization. The results showed that the roadkill indices were 0.003 species/km; 0.009 individuals/km; 0.375 species/monitoring campaign; 1,021 individuals/monitoring campaign; 306,667 kilometers traveled/hit species, and 115,00 kilometers traveled/animal. Seven species recorded are considered threatened: Chrysocyon brachyurus, Leopardus pardalis, Leopardus wiedii, Lycalopex vetulus, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Puma concolor, and Puma yagouaroundi.

Individuals of this species tend to move about 1 km per day (Trovati & Brito 2009), but repetitive locomotion in captivity can also be a stereotype behaviour that future studies could work to decrease by stimulating natural behaviours such as interaction, foraging and feeding (Eguizábal et al 2019). Feeding was also commonly recorded (almost a quarter of records), and included acts related to feeding on terrestrial (11.21%) and arboreal (2.31%) termite mounds.…”

Animais resgatados passam um período em cativeiro antes de serem devolvidos a natureza. Durante esse período em cativeiro é fundamental que os animais apresentem os comportamentos mais próximos dos apresentados na natureza, e enriquecimento ambiental é uma forma de assegurar o bem estar animal em cativeiro. O objetivo deste estudo foi i) descrever o repertório comportamental de indivíduos do tamanduá-mirim (Tamandua tetradactyla) (Ordem Pilosa), e determinar qual comportamento foi mais frequente; ii) avaliar o efeito do período diurno (06:00–18:00) e noturno (18:00–05:59) na frequência dos comportamentos, e iii) comparar a porcentagem de comportamentos com e sem enriquecimento ambiental. Observações foram feitas utilizando o método de animal focal. Cinco machos e uma fêmea foram observados em pares para se observar as interações entre os indivíduos. Foram registrados 30 atos comportamentais distribuídos em seis categorias: locomoção, forrageio, alimentação, inatividade, limpeza corporal e interação. Geralmente, os comportamentos mais frequentemente observados foram locomoção e alimentação, geralmente durante o dia, exceto inatividade, que foi mais comum durante a noite. Esse resultado pode ser atribuído a maior atividade diurna do macho, enquanto as fêmeas são mais noturnas em cativeiro. Nossos resultados sugerem que o enriquecimento ambiental favorece maior bem-estar para os indivíduos em cativeiro através do aumento de comportamentos ativos como alimentação, interação e forrageio. Esse estudo provê uma lista de comportamentos que podem ser úteis em entender a etologia e aspectos relacionados à conservação, especialmente em cativeiro de T. tetradactyla.Palavras chave: Enriquecimento ambiental, tamanduá-mirim, repertório comportamental, animal focal.
