Life provides man with no scientific footholds on reality, suggests to him no narrative plots, offers no rhythmic metaphor to confirm the moving resonance of a human theme. Sinds het begin van de jaren tachtig wordt in de gezinstherapeutische vakliteratuur uitgebreid geschreven over epistemologie, constructivisme en tweede-ordecybernetica. Rond de betekenisinhoud van deze begrippen bestaat heel wat verwarring. Verder blijkt er in de literatuur ook heel wat controverse te zijn rond het epistemologische statuut van 'macht' in de gezinstherapie.In dit artikel worden deze recente ontwikkelingen in de gezinstherapie belicht. Er wordt ook stilgestaan bij het belang van deze nieuwe ontwikkelingen voor de klinische praktijk van de gezinstherapeut. InleidingSinds het begin van de jaren tachtig wordt in de gezinstherapeutische vakliteratuur uitgebreid geschreven over epistemologie, constructivisme en tweede-orde-cybernetica. Er wordt gesproken van een 'nieuwe epistemologie voor de gezinstherapie', 'een constructivistische positie', 'zelf-referentie' en 'tweede-orde-gezinstherapie'. Maar wat betekenen deze woorden? Wat is er nieuw aan deze benaderingen? Of is het allemaal niet meer dan 'epistemo-blabla'? Wat is de relevantie van deze nieuwe ontwikkelingen voor de praktijk van de gezinstherapie?Wat meteen opvalt is, dat er heel wat verwarring bestaat over de gebruikte begrippen. In de gezinstherapeutische literatuur blijken woorden als 'epistemologie' en 'esthetiek' een heel eigen betekenis te hebben, die soms sterk afwijkt van de algemeen gangbare betekenis van die woorden. Held en Pols (1985) wijzen er ook op dat in de gezinstherapeutische literatuur twee betekenissen van 'epistemologie' door elkaar gebruikt worden. Dell (1985) heeft onderscheid gemaakt tussen vijf verschillende manieren waarop Bateson het woord 'epistemologie' gebruikt. Verder blijkt er in de literatuur ook heel wat controverse te zijn rond het epistemologische statuut van 'macht' in de gezinstherapie. Op al deze thema's gaan we verder in deze tekst dieper in. We willen op een heldere en eenvoudige manier deze recente ontwikkelingen in de gezinstherapie belichten. Ongetwijfeld lopen we daarbij het gevaar de rijkdom en complexiteit van deze nieuwe ontwikkelingen op te offeren ten gunste van de inzichtelijkheid van de tekst. We hopen dat ons artikel de lezer echter zal stimuleren om zelf in de boeiende literatuur van constructivisme en epistemologie te gaan grasduinen.

The professional therapist, like an actor, has a role. Inside, in between, and beyond the role is a person without a clearly defined script in the therapeutic interview. This paper looks at the interplay between the therapist's role and personhood. As with the professional actor, the T can be an effective consultant to the role. The ‘I’ or visceral responses of the therapist can increase the therapist's sensitivity to the family members' emotional experience in the familial and therapeutic relationships. This information can help the therapist be more ‘response‐able’– a position where the therapist is more flexible and ‘able to respond’ to the emotional experience of the family interview. Thus, by increasing therapeutic options, the interface between the ‘I’ and the role can help the therapist be more professionally ethical and ‘responsible’.
