“…The current paradigm is that dengue is passed from human to human by the bite of an infected mosquito. However, reports of nonvector transmission are steadily escalated . Most of these nonvector DENV infections are underreported even in endemic countries.…”

“…Traditionally, DENV is transmitted to humans via the bite of the infectious female mosquitos of the genus Aedes , mainly A. aegypti . Recently, nonvector DENV transmission has been reported in the literature, including intravenous and/or intradermal inoculation, mucocutaneous exposure, blood transfusion, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), solid organ transplantation, needlestick in patient care or laboratory accident, vertical transmission from mother to infant, and breastfeeding . This line of evidence suggests that DENV can be transmitted through direct exposure through blood/body fluid exposure, leading to disease.…”

“…These will not be discussed as there is no clear demonstration of nosocomial or person-to-person spread, although there have been reports of transmission of Dengue virus through needlestick injuries 19. Lesser-known VHF viruses in this family are the Omsk , Kyasanur and Alkhurma haemorrhagic fever viruses , which are thought to spread from bites of infected ticks, although other methods of transmission have been postulated (see table 1).…”

“…4 This method of identifying healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has been considered the gold standard for hospital surveillance, 4 and few studies have validated metrics utilizing administrative data for HAIs. 3,[5][6][7] The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of the CVC-related bloodstream infection metric as a proxy for the NHSN CLABSI metric. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is a 732-bed, tertiary-care, teaching hospital.…”

“…Nosocomial acquisition of dengue fever has been reported to occur by needle-stick injury, 5 mucocutaneous exposure to blood, 6 blood transfusion, 7 and transplantation 6 . In this study, we describe cases of hospital-acquired vector-transmitted dengue disease in a setting of high prevalence of the disease.…”
