Nosocomial Rotavirus Infection in European Countries

Abstract: The data currently available on the epidemiology, severity and economic burden of nosocomial rotavirus (RV) infections in children younger than 5 years of age in the major European countries are reviewed. In most studies, RV was found to be the major etiologic agent of pediatric nosocomial diarrhea (31-87%), although the number of diarrhea cases associated with other virus infections (eg, noroviruses, astroviruses, adenoviruses) is increasing quickly and almost equals that caused by RVs. Nosocomial RV (NRV) in… Show more

“…Important additional vaccine benefits that could improve QoC in the hospital environment have been less well documented and reported. It is known that RV is very contagious and that strict hygiene measures cannot always avoid the spread of the virus [28, 29]. The present study indicates that, with the introduction of the vaccine, an important drop of 85% in nosocomial RV infections can be achieved within a few years, together with a reduction in the overall average duration of hospital stay for the disease.…”

“…Given that hygienic-sanitary measures are unable to limit the diffusion of this fecal-oral disease, vaccination currently represents the only effective system to reduce human and economic costs related to RVGE [11,20]. Two new live, oral, attenuated RV vaccines were licensed and are now commercialized for routine use in over 90 countries worldwide: a pentavalent humanbovine reassortant vaccine and a vaccine derived from an attenuated human RV.…”

“…Moreover, an opportunity also exists to use the integrated Cryptosporidium assay to identify the genotypes and species of Cryptosporidium infecting the community, assisting authorities with disease surveillance and identifying potential sources of infection. Additionally, sewage epidemiology may be a more accurate predictor of community disease burden due to significant underreporting of certain diseases in the community (18)(19)(20). This may be the cause for the weaker relationship between notification rate and oocyst density seen when oocyst density spikes were removed from the data.…”
