“…Barik's study examined a total of 11 suprasegmental parameters in a variety of speech modes and found, in addition, that in spontaneous speech, pause duration was greater and speech rate was faster than in read speech. Mean F,, values have been found to be significantly higher in speech read aloud compared to spontaneous speech (Snidecor, 1943;Mysak, 1959;Hollien & Jackson, 1973;Johns-Lewis, 1986). Brown, Currie and Kenworthy (1980, p. 17) discuss differences between the tasks of assigning an intonation contour to a read text and to spontaneous speech, pointing out that 'claims made about intonation on the basis of the study of texts read aloud, should be subject to the most careful scrutiny if there is any suggestion that these will correctly characterise the intonation of spontaneous speech'.…”

“…Discrepancies between studies in sample size, age range of subjects, voice sampling techniques, instrumentation, and measurement techniques preclude the presentation of definitive data. However, the major studies of speaking fundamental frequency in adults within the 20 to 29 years age group have demonstrated that the approximate mean for males is 128 Hz with a range of 60 to 260 Hz, while the approximate mean for females is 227 Hz with a range of 128 to 520Hz (Zemlin, 1968;Hollien & Shipp, 1972;Hollien & Jackson, 1973;Kelley, 1977). Thus, although female voices average 1 a7 times higher in fundamental frequency than do those of males, the ranges for males and females overlap considerably.…”
