Nonlinear Large Deformation Mechanism and Stability Control of Deep Soft Rock Roadway: A Case Study in China

Abstract: Improving the safety and stability of soft surrounding rock with nonlinear large deformation gives a strong guarantee for the safe mining and sustainable development of deep coal mines. In order to control the nonlinear large deformation of the surrounding rock in a deep soft rock roadway, this paper discusses the nonlinear large deformation mechanism and coupling support countermeasures of a typical engineering application at Xin’an coal mine in Gansu province, China. The series of experiments and theoretical… Show more

“…Rocks surrounding the coal seams are generally very weak [3,7]. Increasing mining depth due to high in-situ stress, high overburden, and tectonic stress causes the surrounding rock to undergo large nonlinear deformation [8], making it soft [9], e.g., the Pingdingshan mining area [10], Yili No. 1 Coal Mine [11], Xiaokang Coal Mine [12], Xin'an coal mine in Gansu Province [13,14].…”

“…Under the mutual superposition of high ground stress and strong mining stress, the roadway and surrounding rock masses generally have problems such as the strength deterioration of surrounding rock, deterioration of the stress environment, and structural instability and large deformation of surrounding rocks [4][5][6]. In severe cases, roof fall and slabs may occur [7,8].…”

“…To cope with the damage caused by the large deformation of the soft rock, several coping methods have been proposed in engineering practice and theoretical research [20][21][22][23][24]. Zhang et al [25] believed that setting the reserved deformation in the tunnel support structure can effectively reduce the damage caused by the large deformation of the soft rock tunnel, and the reserved deformation should be set between the initial support and secondary lining.…”
