Nonlinear FEM based high‐speed shell shattering simulation for shelled edible agricultural products: Pecan fruit shattering

Abstract: This paper introduces an advanced engineering simulation procedure for the nonlinear finite element method (FEM) based high‐speed shattering case of shelled edible agricultural products. A high‐speed impactor which is targeted at the Pecan fruit (kernel‐in‐shell) was considered in this case study. Physical compression tests were conducted on Pecan fruit specimens and experimental deformation characteristics were utilized to describe realistic material models in the FEM based engineering simulation. “…In this research, maximum elastic modulus and bio‐yield stress (CV: yellow, ripening stage: unripe) caused maximum stress. While, the maximum bruise volume was obtained for Fishemi CV (ripe stage), and the results consent with Celik et al (2017) and Celik et al (2021).…”

“…To reduce mechanical damage, experimental and simulation methods are acceptable solutions (Fadiji et al, 2018; Zheng et al, 2021). Agriculture machines, horticultural systems, and food industry apparatus were investigated, developed, and optimized by numerical methods, recently (Celik et al, 2017; Ji et al, 2017; Jin et al, 2021; Schillaci et al, 2022; Shahgholi et al, 2020; Zare et al, 2020). Finite element (FE) is one of the numerical methods to assess the harvest process of different agricultural products such as apple (Ji et al, 2017), macaw palm fruit (Santos et al, 2021), tomato (Hou et al, 2021), jujube (Peng et al, 2017), and orange (Liu et al, 2018).…”

“…The hexahedral sweep division was used to ensure the density of the model mesh, as shown in Figure 16 (Celik, 2017b;Celik, Caglayan, & Rennie, 2016;Logan, 2002). The contact between the blade and the garlic was set as a surface-to-surface erosion contact.…”
