Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a dielectric elastomer membrane undergoing in-plane deformation

Abstract: This paper proposes a free energy model to study the dynamic characteristics of a dielectric elastomer membrane undergoing in-plane deformation, subject to the combined loads of a mechanical press and an electric field. The natural frequency of the small-amplitude perturbation around the state of equilibrium is calculated with focus on the damping effects and the resonance phenomenon. The numerical results, such as the oscillation, phase diagrams and Poincaré maps, are presented to show the influence of the da… Show more

“…Sheng et al (2014) studied the special case where lengths L 1 =L 2 and the DE structure is isotropic and is subject to equal biaxial stresses, i.e., the two in-plane stretches are equal. The mechanical forces are static while the voltage varies sinusoidally.…”

“…DE structure is mostly expected to work under dynamic excitation in many applications, e.g., pump, loudspeaker, and vibrotactile displays for mobile application. Thus, dynamical behavior, such as natural frequency and nonlinear response, was mostly investigated theoretically and experimentally (Fox and Goulbourne, 2008;Son and Goulbourne, 2010;Zhu et al, 2010a;2010b;Liu et al, 2014;Sheng et al, 2014).…”

“…Li et al [22] presented an analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of a DE as electromechanical resonator (DEER) configured as a pure-shear actuator. An investigation in our previous paper [23] reported the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a DE membrane undergoing in-plane deformation. Wang et al [24] investigated the strain-stiffening effect on the nonlinear vibration of a circular DE membrane subjected to electromechanical load.…”
