Purpose: To summarize the concise etiology of pleural effusion in 3707 patients over a period of 13 years at the Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. Methods: A total of 3707 patients with pleural effusion were included from January 2007 to December 2019 at our hospital. According to etiology, pleural effusion was divided into infectious pleural effusion and noninfectious pleural effusion. The infection factors were further subdivided as being caused by tuberculous, paragonimiasis, parapneumonic factors (including multiple bacterias, multiple viruses, mycoplasma, chlamydia, chlamydia, fungus and fever, blood routine examination shows increased white blood cells and neutrophils). The noninfectious factors were further subdivided into neoplastic, trauma, other causes. They were also divided into the infants and young children group (3 y and below), the preschool group (3–6 y) and the school-age group (above 6 y) depending on age. Results: Among the 3707 children, there were 2925 (78.9%) patients with infectious pleural effusions, and 782 (21.1%) patients with noninfectious pleural effusions. The incidence of infectious pleural effusions caused by parapneumonic factors decreased significantly with increasing age; however, parapneumonic factors remained the primary etiology of infectious pleural effusion in each group. The incidence of infectious pleural effusions caused by tuberculosis and paragonimiasis increased significantly with increasing of age. Tumor was the primary cause of noninfectious pleural effusion. The incidence of noninfectious pleural effusion caused by tumor and other causes increased significantly with increasing age. The incidence of noninfectious pleural effusion caused by trauma in the preschool group was significantly greater than that of the infants and young children group and school-age group. The number of noninfectious pleural effusion caused by other causes in the school-age group were significantly greater than those of in the infants and young children group and preschool group. Conclusion: In our center, pediatric pleural effusion was primarily caused by infections. parapneumonic factors were the primary causes of infectious pleural effusions. The proportion of noninfective pleural effusions in the etiology of pleural effusion in children was small; however, some were difficult to treat, requiring long-term treatment and possibly poor prognosis. Therefore, multidisciplinary treatment should be combined.

ObjectivesNon-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is utilized for screening the likelihood of fetal aneuploidy, presenting the benefits of non-invasiveness, high sensitivity, and specificity. Its application in prenatal screening has become ubiquitous. The inquiry into how pregnant women comprehend and determine NIPT screening strategies is paramount. Regrettably, there has been a dearth of research on this subject in China. Consequently, this study scrutinizes pregnant women’s cognizance and perspectives concerning NIPT, furnishing a foundation for advancing its judicious implementation.MethodsFrom February 2021 to December 2022, a questionnaire survey was conducted among pregnant women receiving prenatal care and screening at the Women’s Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, who were randomly selected from a pool of individuals exhibiting a high risk of fetal aneuploidy on serological screening. The survey aimed to gather data on participant characteristics, knowledge, perception, and willingness concerning NIPT. The study employed chi-square and Kruskal Wallis tests to analyze subgroup differences.ResultsA total of 226 valid questionnaires were obtained. 83.2% of women pregnant women identified as high risk by serological screening would opt for NIPT, with 66.4% indicating that they would prefer NIPT for fetal aneuploidy screening in future pregnancies. These findings suggest a notable willingness among pregnant women to undergo NIPT. Additionally, the results suggest that various factors, including place of residence, educational level, family income, causes of abortion, and conception method, influence pregnant women’s knowledge about NIPT Accordingly, the level of NIPT knowledge varies among pregnant women.ConclusionThe survey generally revealed that pregnant women were strongly inclined to select NIPT; however, expectant Chinese mothers possess limited knowledge and perception regarding this screening method for fetal aneuploidy. Therefore, the government must implement effective measures to augment public awareness of fetal aneuploidy screening and encourage the judicious utilization of NIPT.

Background: Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has been widely adopted in prenatal examination for fetal chromosomal aneuploidy. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical features of NIPT for both common trisomy and sex chromosome aneuploidy (SCA). Methods: A total of 24,164 pregnant women with NIPT testing from July 2020 to June 2022 were recruited at the Linping Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital. Results: Ninety cases showed high risk of trisomy 21/18/13 with karyotype results available, and the sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV) were 98.41%, 99.88% and 68.89%, respectively. The three most important reasons for screening were advanced maternal age (AMA, 28.06%), intermediate risk of prenatal screening (20.34%) and Multiple of medium (MoM) abnormality of prenatal screening (17.38%). High risk of NIPT results with Z-score ≥15 have a higher PPV when compared to those with 3 ≤ Z-score < 10, and 10 ≤ Z-score < 15. Meanwhile, 97 pregnant women received positive results for fetal sex chromosome aneuploidy (SCA) in NIPT. In addition, the rate for further diagnostics of SCA was 64.95% and the PPV of SCA was 50.79%. Conclusions: Our data show that NIPT has a promising future in prenatal screening for genetic abnormalities of the fetus, and that the accuracy of NIPT is closely related to Z-score.
