Nondestructive Measurement Method to Detect Water/Void inside Slabs using Compact Neutron Source by Backscattered Neutrons

Abstract: A nondestructive inspection method which is in type using backscattered neutrons to detect void and water in concrete with RIKEN Accelerator-driven Compact Neutron Source (RANS) is developed. In this method, it is not necessary to be interposed the sample between the radiation source and the detector as in the conventional method using neutron transmission. The position of water and void in the concrete are measured from the intensity change of the backscattered neutrons selected from the incident up to 1 ms. … Show more

“…Some of these sources serve specific purposes, from nuclear physics applications mea-suring high energy neutron cross-sections (e.g. [4]), via portable sources for the non-destructive inspection of road infrastructures such as bridges, tunnels, and elevated roadways [5], to medical applications in hospitals for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) [6].…”

“…Neutron is also applicable to detect a structural failure due to degradation of material in the infrastructure. Recently, many compact accelerators are developed for the purposes of physical property studies [2], BNCT [3] and nondestructive measurement to detect water/void inside slabs by backscattered neutrons [4]. In these facilities, radiation shields are built to protect people and equipment from radiation exposure.…”

“…Recently, RANS has been developed as an in-house multipurpose neutron facility for nondestructive inspection (Otake et al, 2017;Ikeda et al, 2017), steel corrosion imaging (Taketani et al, 2017) and the volume fraction analysis of retained austenite (Ikeda et al, 2016(Ikeda et al, , 2018. Because the texture optimization of advanced materials has attracted wider attention for better strength-ductility balance and functional performance, we have attempted to establish a neutron texture measurement environment at RANS through various technical optimizations.…”
