Nonaqueous Microemulsions Based on N,N′-Alkylimidazolium Alkylsulfate Ionic Liquids

Abstract: The ternary system composed of the ionic liquid surfactant (IL-S) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate ([Bmim][DodSO4]), the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([Emim][EtSO4]), and toluene has been investigated. Three major mechanisms guiding the structure of the isotropic phase were identified by means of conductometric experiments, which have been correlated to the presence of oil-in-IL, bicontinuous, and IL-in-oil microemulsions. IL-S forms micelles in toluen… Show more

“…Therefore, recent efforts have dedicated on the formulation of cosurfactant‐free microemulsion or RMs with biocompatible excipients. Also, SAILs used so far for preparation of RMs mainly contain imidazolium cations, which might cause environmental hazards when released through waste‐water effluents . Therefore, toxicity and biodegradation remain crucial concerns while dealing with the ILs, and the search for synthesis of more greener ILs in terms of toxicity and biodegradability is growing day by day .…”

“…This second application is probably a more promising option from green chemistry point of view (excludes the use of volatile organic solvents as a nonpolar part of microemulsions), however most of the publications characterize mainly nonaqueous systems, and their number is still increasing [25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…identified three phases in microemulsions composed of IL surfactant 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([emim][etSO 4 ]) and toluene; in addition, they reported the formation of spherical micellar aggregates that could solubilize [emim][etSO 4 ] 32. …”
