Non-verbal communication analysis in Victim–Offender Mediations

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper we present a non-invasive ambient intelligence framework for the semi-automatic analysis of nonverbal communication applied to the restorative justice field. In particular, we propose the use of computer vision and social signal processing technologies in real scenarios of Victim-Offender Mediations, applying feature extraction techniques to multi-modal audio-RGB-depth data. We compute a set of behavioral indicators that define communicative cues from the fields of psychology and observa… Show more

“…Fourth, we assumed the victims' willingness to engage in VOM as the victims were solely informed about the possibility to have mediated contact with the offender. Notably, VOM follows the principle that it is entered into on a voluntary basis (Umbreit and Armour, 2010;Ponce-lópez et al, 2015;Hansen and Umbreit, 2018). We did not control whether a participant would have been willing to take part in mediation or not.…”

“…The theoretical concept brought about by semiotics is that of sign and relative sign relationship, or semiosis. * This is because semiotics studies every phenomenon of meaning and communication found, in order to face an object of analysis in a more complex reality, than the simple theoretical object of a sign (Dinică, 2014;Amaoka et al, 2011;Ponce-López et al, 2015).…”

“…This paper provides a methodology, which we are using in our challenge on automatic personality trait analysis from video data [26]. The automatic analysis of videos to characterize human behavior has become an area of active research with a wide range of applications [1,2,27,28]. Research advances in computer vision and pattern recognition have lead to methodologies that can successfully recognize consciously executed actions, or intended movements, for instance, gestures, actions, interactions with objects and other people [29].…”
