Non-specific urethritis associated with a tetracycline-resistant T-mycoplasma.

Abstract: CanadaWhile the causes of venereally-acquired non-specific urethritis in men remain debatable, there is strong evidence that a tetracycline-sensitive infective agent is responsible for the majority of cases. Because the urethritis is abacterial, either mycoplasmas (Shepard, 1968;Ford, 1970;McCormack, Braun, Lee, Klein, and Kass, 1973) or Chlamydia (Dunlop, VaughanJackson, Darougar, and Jones, 1972;Oriel, Reeve, Powis, Miller, and Nicol, 1972;Richmond, Hilton, and Clarke, 1972) have become the main contenders f… Show more

“…The recurrence or continued presence of ureaplasmas after treatment may also be due to the existence of organisms which are relatively tetracycline-resistant. These have been found in Canada (Ford and Smith, 1974) and in England (Prentice, Taylor-Robinson, and Csonka, 1976). It is noteworthy that all the strains examined in the present study were highly sensitive to the antibiotic in vitro.…”

“…The following clinical study suggests a causative role in the recurrent urethritis suffered by the husband of one conjugal sexual partnership, and it supports a recent case report (Ford and Smith, 1974) that T-mycoplasmas can, in at least specific circumstances, cause urethritis. Case report A man aged 50 years was referred to one of us (DKF) in October, 1974, for recurrent non-gonococcal uretbritis.…”

“…Tetracycline is the drug commonly used to treat infections caused by U. urealyticum (20). A high-level tetracycline-resistant (Tcr) strain was first isolated in 1974 (6). Now 6 to 10% of the Seattle isolates are resistant (24).…”
