Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 90 Homosexual Men

Abstract: We describe the histologic and clinical features of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed between January 1980 and December 1983 in 90 homosexual men from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, and New York. The median age was 37 years, with an age distribution identical to that for cases of AIDS reported to the Centers for Disease Control. Sixty-two per cent of the patients had high-grade (aggressive) subtypes of lymphoma, 29 per cent had subtypes of intermediate grade, and 7 per cent had low-grade subtypes. Histolo… Show more

“…at least 60 times greater than that expected in the general population [10, 11]. In 1985, the Centers for Disease Control included high-grade B-cell lymphoma as an AIDS-defining illness [12]. The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy resulted in a substantial relative risk reduction for Kaposi’s sarcoma, primary central nervous system lymphoma and other AIDS-defining conditions but showed a lesser decline for AIDS-related NHL [13].…”

“…Lymphomas are encountered with increased frequency in people living with HIV/AIDS (PWHA) [3]. In the post HAART (highly active anti-retroviral therapy) era, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is the most common malignancy in PWHA, superseding Kaposi's sarcoma.…”

“…This is particularly true in resource-limited settings, such as sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a noticeable increase in NHL incidence [6]- [9]. HIV-NHL are typically highgrade, B-cell lymphomas, such as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma [3] [9] [10]. Indolent lymphomas tend to be more sporadic, and according to the AIDS Lymphoma Registry, account for <3% of all NHL occurring in HIV seropositive patients [11].…”
