Non-Hodgkin malignant lymphomas and peripheral neuropathies—13 cases

Abstract: Non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas (NHML) are malignant lymphoid proliferations which may be of B or T cell type. Thirteen observations of an association between peripheral neuropathy and B type NHML are reported. None of the cases had evidence of meningeal propagation or neurotoxicity from chemotherapy. The NHML were classified according to the Working Formulation and Kiel classifications. The various mechanisms of peripheral neuropathy in these cases were split into four broad groups. Group I consisted of fou… Show more

“…We present a patient with MBCL and Sjögren’s syndrome associated with a chronic demyelinating polyneuropathy provoked by anti-MAG antibodies. The peripheral nerve involvement in lymphoproliferative diseases can be explained by an intraneural localisation of lymphomatous cells, or by the anti-myelin activity of the IgM monoclonal antibodies [3]. The anti-myelin activity of the patient’s serum, seen by the detection of anti-myelin associated glycoprotein or anti-glycolipid antibodies, has been observed in patients with benign hypergammaglobinaemia, multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, Waldenström’s macroglobulinaemia, B-CLL but rarely in non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas [3, 4].…”

It is also interesting that non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas with anti-MAG polyneuropathies are of a histological type different from that of our patient, namely lymphocytic, lymphoplasmacytic, centrocytic, centroblastic and immunoblastic.…”

“…91 The clinical course is usually subacute, and onconeural antibodies are negative. Paraneoplastic neuropathies are more common in HL and NHL with monoclonal bands.…”
