Non-destructive Testing of Split Sleeve Welds by the Ultrasonic TOFD Method

Abstract: This article deals with the non-destructive ultrasonic testing of split sleeve butt joints by ultrasonic methods. Split sleeve is used to repair gas pipelines with gas leakage. The new ultrasonic methods TOFD and Phased Arrays are compared considering to the selected butt weld configuration. To compare testing methods, ES Beam Tool software was used to prediction of ultrasonic beam spread through weld joint. TOFD technology was selected to butt weld section testing according to the beam spread simulation resul… Show more

“…Thus, losses related to the scrapping of the current production are avoided. It is purposeful to develop the existing and implement new non-destructive testing methods (Patek et al, 2014;Trzewiczek et al, 2014), as this minimizes economic losses. Image analysis methods (Szczotok and Roskosz, 2005;Szczotok and Sozańska, 2009) seem to be particularly promising here, as the theoretical and analytical background is very developed, and the current development of both optical devices and processing power allows for using these methods online.…”

“…Following the repair, the welds would have to undergo the specified quality control procedure once again. Only its positive result would allow for the further implementation of the production process [11]. Summarizing the presented analysis, it should be noted that the choice of the methods described above is not accidental.…”

“…The technological aspect issues will interest welders [9] and power engineers [10]. Quality engineers will pay attention to detection issues [11,12], and process engineers will pay attention to optimization, both in production [13][14][15] and service [16]. Equally important is the use of appropriate protective coatings [17] and anti-corrosion protection [18][19][20], even in biotech industry [21].…”

“…For scientific purposes, it provides data sets for the development of analytical methods [27,28]. The experience gained may be an inspiration in the field of analytical [29][30][31] and organizational methodologies, providing them with improved information on the durability of parts [32,33]. It can also be useful when designing the structure of specific industrial databases [34,35], as well as non-contact shaping techniques [36,37].…”
