Non-blinking dendritic crystals from C-dot solution

Abstract: Bio-imaging and drug carriers for delivery have created a huge demand for crystals. Crystals are fascinating materials that have been grown for a long time but obtaining biocompatible fluorescent crystals is a challenging task. We report on the growth of fluorescent crystals using a carbon dot (C-dot) solution by a hydrothermal process. The crystallization pattern of these C-dots exhibited a unique dendritic structure having a feather-like morphology. The growth temperature and pressure were maintained at 60°C… Show more

“…This is in accordance to the study that Cdots generally show optical uptake on the wavelength of UV with the tail extending on the wavelength of visible light [15,20]. Furthermore, the peaks indicate the core of Cdots [21]. Based on Figure 3, the stem of kangkung provides the highest absorbance peak.…”

“…This is in accordance with the study that shows the absorbance peak of Cdots is at 260-360 nm [18]. As in the previous result, the samples have one absorbance peak that shows the core of Cdots [21]. Moreover, the root of kangkung has the highest absorbance peak.…”

“…The peak shifted from 267 to 280 nm for different durations of time, and has the value of 280 nm for a 2 h reaction. The UV-Vis graph shows that maximum absorbance is variable with time and varies from 267 nm to 280 nm [34,35].…”

“…The emission at 499.57 nm indicates a green wavelength (495-770 nm) so that the C-dots solution produced emits green light. 45,46 According to literature, the second peak at 673.52 nm shows a structure of porphyrin, which is a part of many structures of chlorophyll. 45,48 In this case, the porphyrin comes from the olive oil because olive oil contains chlorophyll compounds.…”

“…45 The transition of the first and second peaks are π → π* and n → π*, respectively. 46 One or two absorbance peaks with absorbance profile extending to higher visible wavelengths indicates the formation of C-dots. 15,47 Hence, the above UV-Vis results show differences between the C-dots solution and olive oil in their absorbance properties.…”
