Eco Friendly Synthesis of Carbon Dot by Hydrothermal Method for Metal Ions Salt Identification

Abstract: In this work, we report the synthesis method of carbon quantum dots (CDs) using the one-step method for fast and effective metal ion determination. Ascorbic acid was used as an inexpensive and environmentally friendly precursor. High-pressure and high-temperature reactors were used for this purpose. Microscopic characterization revealed the size of CDs was in the range of 2–6 nm and they had an ordered structure. The photoluminescence properties of the CDs depend on the process temperature, and we obtained the… Show more

“…The hydrothermal method refers to a method in which the reaction system is heated to a critical temperature or close to that level in a sealed container with specific solvents as the medium, to generate high pressure and realize inorganic synthesis or material preparation [ 59 ]. In general, the hydrothermal method of quantum nanodot synthesis offers the unique advantage of low setup costs, better environmental sustainability and a product with a higher quantum yield [ 60 ]. At present, this method has become popular for preparing water-soluble SiQDs.…”

“… Such methods have several advantages, including an ample supply of raw materials, a simple process with fewer steps, and the large-scale development of bulk reagents and precursors. In addition, the GQDs prepared using this method primarily have the functional group oxygen on their surface and exhibit high water solubility and surface passivation due to the “edge-functionalized GQDs”. As a result, utilizing this type of strategy for controlling morphology appears to be crucial. Some of them are not feasible to implement on a large scale due to their high cost; scalability on a large scale is also tricky; and other issues include the use of acids, high temperatures, and the environment. , …”

“…Before a hydrothermal reaction can take place, the raw materials must be treated with a potent oxidant. The reaction also requires high temperatures and high pressure, which might result in combustion or an explosion . Although H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , or other oxidants are required for the chemical oxidation process, which is now the most commonly used method, they may also result in corrosion or explosions.…”

“…The hydrothermal method solves the weakness of the difficult size to control and the large energy. The hydrothermal method has the advantages of being easy, environmentally friendly, not requiring large energy, and the particle size is easy to control [25]. Carbon dots are non-toxic materials and have good biocompatibility, so anti-bacterial agents are widely used.…”
