Non-antibiotic prevention and treatment against Acinetobacter baumannii infection: Are vaccines and adjuvants effective strategies?

Abstract: Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen widely attached to the surface of medical instruments, making it one of the most common pathogens of nosocomial infection, and often leading to cross-infection and co-infection. Due to the extensive antibiotic and pan-resistance, A. baumannii infection is facing fewer treatment options in the clinic. Therefore, the prevention and treatment of A. baumannii infection have become a tricky global problem. The requirement for research … Show more

“…Moreover, besides antibiotics, nonantibiotic treatment strategies are being investigated for the treatment of bacterial resistance. Recently, new research on A. baumannii vaccines, specifically whole-cell vaccines, including inactivated and live attenuated bacterial ghost and DNA ones, has been reported [ 141 ]. Infections caused by extensively drug-resistant A. baumannii (XDR-Ab) and plasmid/chromosomal-mediated (Col-R- Ab COL R - Ab ) are the main challenge and need a well-planned control program and proper treatment [ 142 , 143 ].…”

“…This results in resistance to many antibiotics, such as carbapenems, tigecycline, etc. [ 101 ]. The current severe situation in A. baumannii infections is that no effective drugs are available [ 102 ].…”

“…Pumps expel antibiotics out of the cell, which decreases drug accumulation and increases the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) required. Efflux pumps could also be implicated in the early stages of infection, causing complications such as adhesion to host cells and colonization [ 101 ].…”

“…Since antibiotic-resistant A. baumannii is one of the most common pathogens that cause infections, WHO published the list (ESKAPE) of pathogens that urgently need new antimicrobial developments in 2017 and designated this pathogen as a "priority status" [4]. As mentioned above, polymyxins and tigecycline are the last treatment strategy for A. baumanii, one of the ESKAPE species, but there are resistant strains that overcome this strategy, so new treatment and control measures should be taken urgently [5].…”
