Non‐ablative skin tightening with radiofrequency in Asian skin

Abstract: RF treatment was very satisfactory for skin tightening in Asian facial skin. When compared with published literature from the United States, the results suggested that there might be race-related differences in the treatment parameters.

“…This observation was also noted by Kushikata et al (8) and the authors attribute this effect to the thermally mediated increase in skin metabolism with inhibition of sebaceous gland activity (18). The longevity of the clinical results has yet to be determined, although improvement is maintained for at least 6 months (6,8). It is likely that maintenance treatments are required for continued improvement.…”

“…As non-surgical, non-ablative technologies using radiofrequency energy (4)(5)(6)(7)(8) and broad spectrum infrared light (9,10) do not have this prolonged recovery, they have become popular in recent years for the improvement of rhytides and lax skin. Radiofrequency energy is a form of electromagnetic energy ranging from 300 MHz to 3 KHz that produces an electrical current which generates heat as a result of tissue resistance to the movement of electrons within the radiofrequency field (11).…”

“…The investigators judged treatment of nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and sagging jowls. The RF treatment was found to be effective at the 6-month evaluation [19]. In this regard, the mean treatment time this present study was approx.…”

“…They reported the most appropriate time for evaluating the maximum effectiveness of RF energy to be 5-6 months after the treatment. They found the most important indicator for determining the surgical RF energy level to be the pain threshold of the individual (20). We planned our treatment by considering the recommendations of Kushikata et al regarding energy level selection and evaluation of treatment effectiveness.…”
