Background: Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is a major health issue with high prevalence globally and has major social, economic and psychological effects. Aim of the work: Assessment of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) prevalence among employees at wood industry in Damietta governorate. Patients and methods: The present cross-sectional study was carried out in New Damietta city, Damietta governorate, Egypt. Ten workplaces were selected through convenience sampling. From these ten workplaces, one hundred fifty (150) employees agreed to participate in the study. Pure-tone audiometry between 500 and 8000Hz frequencies determined the hearing condition of the participants and noise readings were conducted at the selected workplaces. Results: Among all study participants, the prevalence of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) was 39% of carpenters and 44.4% of sawyers with no statistically significant difference (P = 0.253) between both groups. Noise levels ranged from 73 to 91.5 dBA in the various furniture factories and from 74.9 to 94.1 dBA in the different saw mills. Conclusion: Occupational noise induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is highly prevalent in Damietta governorate among wood workers, which might be due to lack of knowledge, awareness about NIHL among employers, workers, and health care workers along with absence and or implementation of hearing conservation programs in the work places.

Background: Timber industry is one industry that has experienced an increase in noise levels as a result of the presence of modern machines, higher speeds, and more levels so that the risk of workers experiencing hearing loss due to noise can increase as the occurrence of Noise-Induced Permanent Threshold Shif (NIPTS). Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the risk factors associated with subjective complaints of workers due to noise at work and formulate control measures to prevent the occurrence of NIPTS. Methods: This type of research is analytic observational with a cross-sectional design at PT.X, Probolinggo Regency in June 2019. The research sample of 44 respondents was chosen randomly by simple random sampling and the data were analyzed by chi-square test (α = 0.05). Result: The results of noise measurements in the work environment show that the 5 areas in the production section, only 3 areas have an average noise more than 85 dBA, namely WW1, WW2, and WW3. Whereas the most non-auditory complaints suffered by workers were among those with noise intensity of more than 85 dBA and in the WW2 and WW1 work areas. The results of cross-tabulation and analysis of Chi-Square statistical tests showed that the value of p = 0,000 <(α = 0.05). This means there is a significant relationship between noise intensity with complaints of hearing loss in workers. Conclusion: only the intensity of noise with complaints of hearing loss in workers who have a statistically significant relationship.

ABSTRACT:In coastal regimes groundwater aquifers are often vulnerable to saltwater intrusion. Saltwater intrusion is often precipitated by natural hydrodynamic processes and overpumping of groundwater resource. Saltwater intrusion is presumed to have significant effect on quality of groundwater and accountable for lack of access to freshwater in the areas under study. The objective of this study is to use resistivity data obtained from vertical electrical sounding to ascertain the salinity of shallow aquifers, determine depth and thickness of freshwater aquifers. The Schlumberger array configuration was employed in acquisition of data. The maximum and minimum spacing between electrodes (AB/2) ranged from 2m to 250m. Resistivity values ranged from 0.24Ωm to 427Ωm, Values which ranged from 0.2Ωm to 4Ωm was construed to be aquifer saturated with saltwater, brackish water was inferred from resistivity values which vary between 7Ωm and 11Ωm, and clay was assigned to resistivity values that ranged from 17Ωm to 29Ωm. Effect of tide contributes to salinity of shallow aquifer around the seashore area. Aquifers saturated with saltwater are found at the depths of 10.5m, brackish water at 4m to 9m, while freshwater can be located from the depth of 19-46m. The study is able to reveal that groundwater quality has been compromised by intrusion of saltwater. We conclude that there is potential of saltwater intrusion into the freshwater lenses, which may be enhanced in the future by over-development of groundwater. © JASEM https://dx.doi.org/10.4314/jasem.v21i2.18
