Noise Characterization and Filtering in the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon TPC

Abstract: A: The low-noise operation of readout electronics in a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) is critical to properly extract the distribution of ionization charge deposited on the wire planes of the TPC, especially for the induction planes. This paper describes the characteristics and mitigation of the observed noise in the MicroBooNE detector. The MicroBooNE's single-phase LArTPC comprises two induction planes and one collection sense wire plane with a total of 8256 wires. Current induced on each TPC … Show more

“…In particular, much is now known from the experience operating the MicroBooNE detector since late in 2015. Significant advances have been made in TPC data analysis using MicroBooNE data, including TPC noise filtering (73), wire signal processing and deconvolution (74,75), reconstruction algorithm development (76,77,78), and the simulation of bulk properties such as the 'space charge effect', which is the distortion of the electric drift field caused by the buildup of positive ions in the LAr from the high rate of cosmic ray activity in detectors that are operated near the surface.…”

“…The ProtoDUNE use case has challenging requirements for the software downstream of the FELIX readout, since it has to support the full data rate, perform trigger matching and lossless data compression. The experience from previous experiments such as MicroBooNE [9] suggests that for a sufficiently low electronics noise level, a compression factor of 4 is feasible for the ProtoDUNE-SP data. Nevertheless, generalpurpose compression algorithms are less efficient, especially if data are not reorganized prior to compression.…”

“…Signal preparation: The bipolar and unipolar signals that come from the low-noise shaping amplifiers are first filtered with standard techniques to reduce excess noise [19] and then processed to statistically remove the induction response shape [20,21]. The end result is a normalized pulse of charge for each wire.…”
