Noise cancelling in wideband CMOS LNAs

Abstract: A noise-cancellingtechnique in a wideband LNA achieves low noise figure (NF) and source impedance matching without global feedback. The 0.25pm LNA provides <2.4dB NF from 0 OI-~GHZ, total voltage gain is 13.7dB, -3dB bandwidth is O.Ol-1.6GHz, S, , is <-36dB, and S,, is <-lOdB. llP2 is 12dBm, and llP3 is OdBm drawing 14mA at 2.5V. “…For equal CG and CS stage gain, the noise due to the CG transistor is fully canceled at the differential output, while the signal contributions to the output signal add up to create a balanced output. This noise-canceling technique was proposed in [8], [9], while different circuit topologies were generated and compared in [10]. The parallel CS-CG topology (or balun-LNA) was found to be one of the best performing topologies (topology "e") in Figs.…”

“…However, low NF and low power consumption can be hardly achieved simultaneously across a large frequency range. In [11], noise cancellation technique is used to relax this trade-off in resistive-feedback amplifiers. In this paper, the bandwidth of a resistive-feedback amplifier with noise cancellation is further extended by using the inductive shunt peaking and series peaking techniques.…”

“…Since the LNA can be directly added to the first stage in the receive path, it usually dominates the NF and bandwidth in the receiver, and a variable gain LNA can improve the dynamic range of the whole receiver. In addition, the traditional wide-band LNA technology is always designed based on inductors and capacitors for wide-band matching with larger size and higher cost [2,3]. Based on the foregoing consideration, we design a LNA which can achieve the requirements of low noise figure, gain control mode, wider bandwidth, and less power consumption by switching different modes.…”
