Nodular gastritis in adults: Clinical features, endoscopic appearance, histopathological features, and response to therapy

Abstract: The symptoms of NG and endoscopic features regress significantly after H. pylori therapy with a proton pump inhibitor and two antibiotics and should routinely be given to treat this form of gastritis. This may prevent progression to further complications.

“…Other reasons for variability in prevalence rate could be related to differences in the study design, host, bacterial or environmental factors. Similar to previous studies [3,13] , we found that female patients were more commonly affected than males. This higher female proportion goes against the concept that H. pylori infection has no gender predilection.…”

“…In support of the idea that H. pylori infection could be the main inducer of the nodular pattern in NG, Dwivedi et al [13] reported that 87.5% of NG patients showed complete normalization of the gastric mucosa following anti-H. pylori therapy. Koh et al [32] found that the increase in gastritis score was dependent on the increase in H. pylori density and was significantly associated with the occurrence of NG.…”

“…However, the definition and clinical importance of NG and associated histopathology could be clarified by prospective long-term follow-up studies including large number of patients. Present data give us the impression that NG would not indicate a new therapeutic approach in addition to the current measures for H. pylori infection [8].…”

“…However, to date, we have not been able to identify the predictive factors for symptomatic relief after H. pylori eradication therapy despite several large-scale trials. Although there is no definite consensus regarding the association between symptoms and endoscopic findings, a recent study reported that patients with nodular gastritis exhibited a clinical amelioration of symptoms after H. pylori eradication therapy, and this is correlated with the endoscopic resolution of nodularity [27]. Nodular gastritis is generally more common among younger patients with mild atrophic mucosa [28].…”
