Helicobacter pylori Eradication Therapy Ameliorates Latent Digestive Symptoms in Chronic Atrophic Gastritis

Abstract: Background/Aims: This study investigated the effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy on latent digestive symptoms in chronic atrophic gastritis. Methods: We enrolled 650 health checkup patients who underwent eradication therapy for chronic gastritis and completed a self-report questionnaire before and after the treatment between January 2014 and December 2016 at the Japanese Red Cross Society Kyoto Daiichi Hospital. “…The authors concluded that H. pylori eradication improved the QOL, especially in patients who had an impaired QOL before eradication . Similar results were reported by Yamada et al , who studied 650 patients with chronic atrophic gastritis and latent digestive symptoms including dyspepsia, and found a significant and persistent (up to 1 year) improvement after H. pylori eradication …”

In an Indian study, 120 patients with dyspepsia were recruited.Fifty-five percent of them were H. pylori positive, 56.7% were positive for stress/anxiety/depression (SAD), and 29.2% for both.…”

“…Both concomitant and hybrid eradication therapies had beneficial impacts on gastrointestinal symptoms in their total GSRS scores. A similar positive effect of eradication therapy has also been observed in earlier studies [ 18 , 19 ]. Additionally, a multicenter prospective study performed in 15 referral institutions on 165 H. pylori infected patients demonstrated that quality of life could be improved regardless of eradication outcome [ 18 ].…”

“…Reflux symptoms, maldigestion and abdominal pain are frequently associated with symptomatic H. pylori infection. Yet, the only beneficial role of successful eradication therapy, in the case of dyspeptic symptoms, is well-known, as previous studies have shown [ 8 , 19 ]. H. pylori gastritis can be the cause of dyspepsia in a subset of patients [ 20 , 21 ].…”
